He is a Livestock Guardian Breed so he needs a family who understands his specific needs

CollingwoodToday, in partnership with the Georgian Triangle Humane Society, brings you a regular feature highlighting a special pet that is in need of adoption.

Max

Hey humans, the name's Max. I'm a big special guy, lookin’ for a big special home.

I'm what the humans call a "Livestock Guardian Breed." This means that I'm a specific type of doggie, looking for a specific type of home with a specific type of owner (a lot of specifics haha).

If you're not familiar with Guardian Breeds or don't have experience with working dogs such as myself, then thank you very much for thinking I'm handsome enough to read my profile *wink*, but unfortunately, I'm just not quite sure that we'd be the right match!

After all, we all want to make sure I'm the right kind of dog for you and that you're the right kind of human for me, right?!

Anyways, as I was saying...my name is Max! I'm a long and lanky 75lb guy here at GTHS looking to find my perfect home. And at about two years old, I'm also a great age.

I arrived at GTHS not too long ago, after making a very long trip to get here from way up north. I'm very excited to be here and to find my perfect placement! So, let me tell you a bit more about me and what being a Guardian Breed means.

When I arrived at GTHS, I had a bit of a history of being fearful of new people, but men in particular. Makes it tough for a big boy like me sometimes, when you're always nervous meeting new humans.. But that said, I've actually been doing a really great job since arriving and have been great with my introductions with new people (yay for me! hehe)

As I'm sure you guessed from the name, Guardian Breeds are working dogs who are bred to protect livestock when no one is around. This means that I can be quite the independent guy and that I also have a knack for problem solving too (though I'm told that characteristic isn't always great in certain settings haha).

I also have no problem "sounding the alarm" when I think there is something suspicious around! So, I hope you don't mind some alert barks.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's VERY important to understand that working doggies like me come with certain characteristics, behaviours and temperaments due to what I was bred for, and these aren't necessarily in line with what a lot of homes and families are able to offer me (and vice versa).

So, if you have working breed experience and a knowledge of Livestock Guardians in particular, then we're off to a great start! But please also consider your current home environment and lifestyle to ensure you really think we'd be the right match.

I will tell you though...even with my history of being weary of new people, once I DO get to know you and feel comfortable with you, I'm actually quite a silly and playful guy.

I apparently also have this "cute habit" of following you around, then coming up and nudging my human friends hands asking for more pets and scratches. Adorable, I know!

So, breed characteristics aside, I really am a sweet boy. The GTHS humans are really just trying to ensure I find my very best placement possible, so that I can be the very best Max possible.

My adoption fee is $400 and includes my neuter, up to date vaccinations, de-wormer and a microchip. I can't wait to meet my new someone soon!

Wags and nudges,
xoxo Max
