'As long as you know the difference between a bed and breakfast and short term accommodation,' says deputy mayor to applicants

The Town of The Blue Mountains received no objections to a bed and breakfast proposal at a public meeting held on May 2.

Town council held the meeting to consider public comments on a proposal to rezone a property located at 589108 Grey Road 19 to allow a bed and breakfast operation on site.

Katarina Sachs, the proponent of the bed and breakfast, attended the meeting that was held in person and virtually to make a presentation to council about her initiative.

Sachs said she and her husband often host family gatherings and their home has plenty of room.

“We would like to be able to offer the two rooms in the basement as guest bedrooms for the bed and breakfast,” she said.

There were no objections verbally or in writing to the proposal at the public meeting. The application did draw a number of comments from Grey County and the Grey Sauble Conservation Authority. However, neither objected to the proposal since there was no new development or other alterations to the property.

Deputy Mayor Peter Bordignon raised the only concern at the council table. He wanted it clear that a bed and breakfast is different from a short term rental, with a bed and breakfast requiring the owners to be on site while guests are staying there.

“As long as you know the difference between a bed and breakfast and short term accommodation. If a bed and breakfast goes through, it’s not a house you can leave and go away and rent out for the weekend,” he said.

Sachs said she is aware of the requirements.

“Every single time we would have guests staying with us, my husband and I would be on-site at all times,” she said.

No decision was made about the proposal at the meeting. Staff will bring forward a report and recommendation to a future council meeting.
