The Ski Cross World Cup is coming back to the Town of The Blue Mountains.

At its committee of the whole meeting on Feb. 3, The Blue Mountains council received a delegation from Alpine Canada’s Jeff Thompson about his organization’s plans to host the 2025 Ski Cross World Cup event at Craigleith Ski Club.

“We’re really excited to be bringing back the Ski Cross World Cup,” Thompson told council.

The Blue Mountains previously hosted the event in 2023. Thompson said that event attracted 5,000 fans to the races at the Craigleith Ski Club. The television audience was 3.8 million people. Athletes from 12 different nations attended and competed with Canadians winning 50 per cent of the podium finishes at the event.

“By all accounts it was an extremely successful event,” he said.

This year, the event will be held at Craigleith Ski Club on March 14 and 15. Thompson asked council to consider approving some support for the event. He requested that the town relax parking restrictions around the ski club on the days of the event to increase the number of parking spaces available. He also requested that the town support the event by promoting it through town social media accounts and through other town communications channels.

Thompson noted that Canada has won the Nations Cup the past 10 years.

“It’s a unique opportunity to bring some heroes to the region,” he said.

After the presentation, council voted in favour of requesting a staff report about the event be brought forward at a future meeting.

Ryan Gibbons, the town’s director of community services, said town staff had reviewed the previous event held in 2023 and found there were no concerns from town operations staff or emergency services agencies. Gibbons said that information would be included in a report for council to consider.
