A fire consumed a barn in Ravenna on Saturday, Feb. 6.

A fire has destroyed a barn in Ravenna, but the three horses usually inside were safely evacuated before the flames spread.

The Blue Mountains Fire department was called out to the 12th Side Road between Grey Road 2 and the 10th Line on Saturday night around 10 p.m. Fire Chief Steve Conn said the owner of the property was about to turn in for the night when they noticed the fire.

Due to hay and old wood construction, Conn said the fire was difficult to extinguish and the structure impossible to save.

The barn, said Conn, was about 100 years old and he considered it a total loss, estimating the dollar value at $150,000. Though he said that's a rough estimate and the value is yet to be determined by an insurance company.

The fire department trucked in water from a nearby source at Rock Union.

Conn said the only ignition source in the barn was electrical. The fire is not being investigated as suspicious.
