The Thornbury Pier project is on track for use next summer, according to staff at the Town of the Blue Mountains (TBM).

“On Dec. 24, the town received 90 per cent design drawings and replied to the engineering firm with comments,” reported Ryan Gibbons, director of community services for TBM.

The federally-owned Thornbury Pier remained closed all summer due to the need for repairs and COVID-19 safety concerns.

Since that time, town staff have worked with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) to coordinate an x-ray review of the pier’s concrete decking for rebar locations and inspected the sub-deck granular material.

“The engineering firm has recommended a full deck replacement,” said Gibbons.

TBM had previously discussed that the replacement deck would be a concrete structure but no final decisions have been made at this time.

The town has budgeted the project to cost $412,000, with $35,000 coming from a federal grant and the remainder will be sourced from the town’s Capital Replacement Reserve.

“DFO will conduct a review following the response from the engineer to the comments and questions proposed by the town,” Gibbons said, adding that the project is on track to be completed on time by Spring 2021.
