The Thornbury Pier resurfacing project continues to push forward as the summer season inches closer.
As of Wednesday June 9, the shell of the former Thornbury pier remained intact at the site, which is located to the west of the Thornbury Harbour in the Town of The Blue Mountains (TBM).
The pier was closed to the public at the end of the summer season in 2019 as town official said it had become a safety issue after high-water levels and rough weather deteriorated the surface.
The pier remained closed through 2020 as TBM made construction plans and coped with changes in public access due to COVID-19.
The pier was set to be resurfaced and the project was outlined and approved in the 2020 town budget, for $412,200, with $35,000 coming from a federal grant and $377,200 from TBM's capital replacement reserve.
Brook Restoration Ltd. was awarded the construction contract for the project and began work at the site on March 12, 2021.
The project hit a delay in late-April when the company informed the town that their crew members’ has been exposed to COVID-19 on April 20.
The construction site was shut down temporarily, but resumed work on May 12.
The resurfacing project was originally scheduled to be completed by May 31, which was pushed back to June 25 following the COVID-related delay.
According to Tim Hendry, director of communication for TBM, the project is still expected to meet the end of June completion date.
He noted that to-date the majority of the concrete has been removed from the surface of the pier, including the detailed removal of the perimeter material along the sheet piling.
The steel work has also begun, which has required modification due to the uneven pilings that were not available to view until the concrete was removed.
“Project completion is estimated by the end of June. At this time, there is no additional information,” Hendry stated Thursday evening.
