Cannabis has quickly become a very popular product since legalization in 2018. For those who are new to cannabis, some of the choices and options can be a little overwhelming and figuring out where to start can be tricky. Luckily, Chelsea Murray, General Manager of Speakeasy Cannabis Co., was able to answer some common questions that many people have about buying and trying cannabis.

What does THC/CBD mean?

“Cannabis is composed of hundreds of chemical compounds that create a unique harmony of effects, which is primarily led by cannabinoids. THC and CBD are the two most common cannabinoids and are the main drivers of cannabis’ therapeutic and recreational effects,” Chelsea explains.

“THC dominant strains are primarily chosen by those seeking a euphoric experience and are sometimes used because they can treat discomfort, depression, anxiety and insomnia. Simply put, THC can make us feel hungry and high, and can relieve symptoms like pain and nausea,” she says.

On the other hand, CBD is a non-intoxicating compound that is known to alleviate anxiety, pain and inflammation. CBD dominant strains typically contain only small amounts of THC.

What percentage of THC should beginners start with?

According to Chelsea, “There are many factors to consider when choosing a strain, but if you find that indica strains consistently deliver a positive experience, then by all means, stick to what you know.”

She suggests beginners start with a low THC percentage and slowly experiment with different levels of THC and CBD in order to find a level that is enjoyable and comfortable for them.  Experienced users may become connoisseurs and start purchasing higher quality product with more complex terpene profiles.

What do indica, sativa and hybrid mean?

Indica, sativa and hybrid are different strains of cannabis that contain different levels of cannabinoids and terpenes. Terpenes are aromatic compounds that are found in plants and fruit.

Indica strains are often thought of as helping with relaxation and curbing insomnia. “Not all indica strains will put you ‘in-da-couch,’ but many consumers associate indicas with full-body effects,” says Chelsea.

Sativa strains are known for having a happy, euphoric or energetic effect. People sometimes think of sativa as a daytime strain and use it to help with productivity, creativity and focus. “While not all sativa marijuana strains will energize you,” says Chelsea, “most consumers notice a tendency for sativas to produce a “head high,” an uplifting, stimulating effect. They also often report sativas as being helpful in mitigating stress or anxiety, and many consumers enjoy sativas to sharpen focus and boost creativity or motivation.”

Hybrid strains are bred from a combination of indica and sativa plants. They contain balanced levels of THC and CBD. “Hybrids tend to be a good choice for novice consumers seeking an introduction to cannabis’ signature high,” says Chelsea.

What accessories are needed to try cannabis for the first time?

Cannabis stores carry a huge assortment of accessories but, according to Chelsea, beginners do not need to invest a lot to get started. “A grinder is a must have, scissors just don’t cut it anymore,” she says. “A pack of Raw papers to roll your own joint or a pipe; nothing excessive. No need to drive ‘the Ferrari’ the first time out. Work your way up, find what method and accessories work best for you.”
