A 20-year-old woman faces numerous charges, including attempted murder, after a Barrie police officer was stabbed in the face Sunday night.
Barrie police say officers and Simcoe County paramedics responded to a Duckworth Street apartment complex around 10 p.m., Feb. 5, for a person who was "reportedly in crisis."
Upon arrival, police say officers gained access to the apartment and "cautiously approached" the female occupant.
"As they were assisting her to her feet, she lunged at one of the officers and stabbed her in the face," police said in a news release.
The officer, who has been a member of the Barrie Police Service since February 2018, was rushed to a local hospital where she was treated for a serious injury and has since been released.
Savannah Boland, 20, has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault on a peace officer, assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, and possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose.
Boland appeared for a bail hearing today at the Ontario Court of Justice located in Barrie. She was remanded in custody until Friday.
“Police officers face significant risks with every shift," said Police Chief Rich Johnston. "We are thankful that she will make a full recovery, but we know the long-term impacts of this incident and injury will have on the officer involved, and our entire service.
"I am grateful to everyone who assisted in the emergency response for our injured officer in their time of need," he added.
