The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) announced the end of its investigation into the arrest of a 21-year-old Wasaga Beach woman.

The SIU was called in to look into the arrest of Brooke Ward after she suffered distress while in a police cell. She was arrested by Huronia West OPP on the morning of Aug. 27 after she posted a video to social media showing herself berating people for parking near her house.

Police charged her with mischief, uttering threats, causing a disturbance, and failing to comply with the terms of a release.

The SIU director, Joseph Martino, reported Ward was arrested “uneventfully,” but at 7:10 p.m. while in a police cell she “began to experience discomfort.” She was six months pregnant at the time and was taken to the hospital.

“The woman was later discharged from hospital without any abnormalities having been diagnosed in respect of her ongoing pregnancy,” states a news release from the SIU.

“It is apparent on the aforementioned-record that the woman did not suffer any serious injury while in police custody on August 27, 2020,” stated Martino in the news release. “Accordingly, the SIU is without jurisdiction to continue with its investigation and the file is hereby closed.”

The SIU is called in to investigate reports involving police where there has been a death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.
