Scarborough driver accused of assaulting police in Wasaga Beach

Officers found $3,600 in cash, suspected cocaine during vehicle search

WASAGA BEACH - On May 9, 2020 at approximately 1:52 a.m., a member of the Huronia West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on Mosley Street in the Town of Wasaga Beach. [It is alleged that] the male driver refused to identify himself and assaulted the officer. The male tried to flee on foot and was confronted by another officer, who was also assaulted. Officers gained control and arrested the male.

A search of the vehicle revealed a large quantity of cash, totalling over $3,600. The male also tried to stash a small plastic bag with suspected cocaine in the rear seat of the police vehicle. Police also learned his identity and found him to have a suspended driver's licence.

The officers did not sustain injuries during the occurrence.

As a result of the investigation, Tyreque Ferron, 21 years of age, of Scarborough, Ont., was charged with the following offences:
    •    Obstruct peace officer - contrary to Section 129(a) of the Criminal Code
    •    Assault a peace officer - contrary to Section 270(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (two counts)
    •    Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 - contrary to Section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code
    •    Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - contrary to Section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
    •    Driving while under suspension - contrary to Section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act

The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Collingwood on Sept. 15, 2020.
