The Orillia Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding parents to be aware of what their children are doing on social media and the internet.

Every year the Orillia OPP, Orillia Community Safety Officers (CSO) and School Resource Officer (SRO) see an influx in calls regarding social media and school-age children and teens.

Some examples of incidents police are seeing include: bullying, production of child pornography, sending and receiving child pornography, luring, threats, and unwanted attention from older people. Children do not realize that their actions online can have very real and serious consequences which include police involvement or harm to themselves.

The Orillia OPP will utilize all investigative resources when dealing with calls regarding children and social media or the internet; however, parent or guardian involvement goes a long way in preventing these occurrences from happening.

There are many tips on how to keep your child safe online here or here. Please take the time to speak to your children about dangers online and how to have fun safely.
