WASAGA BEACH – The joint Huronia West/Collingwood Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Marine Unit has been out in full force for the summer focusing on education, high visibility and enforcement.
During the weekend of July 16-18, 2021, officers logged 29 hours of patrol time on the water and were able to be proactive in multiple locations including Allenwood Beach, New Wasaga Beach, Nottawasaga River, Wasaga Beach Provincial Park (Beaches 1-6), Sunset Point (Collingwood), Collingwood Harbour, Northwinds Beach (Town of Blue Mountains), Craigleith Provincial Park (Town of Blue Mountains), and Thornbury Harbour.
Forty-six vessels were inspected and numerous warnings were issued for various offences.
During this time, 21 marine-related charges were laid under various Provincial and Federal Acts, including the Canada Shipping Act, Liquor Licence Act, and Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves Act. These charges included:
- Failing to have a Personal Flotation Device (PFD)
- Operating a prohibited vessel
- Operating a vessel over maximum speed specified
- No spotter on board while towing
- Open liquor
- Being within a vessel restriction area
The joint Huronia West/Collingwood OPP Marine Unit will continue to commit to safety on our waterways throughout the remainder of the season through education, personal relations, high visibility and enforcement.
