Collingwood family threatened with gun while on hike (update)

A man fired a gun several times into the air after yelling the family was trespassing, say police; Charge has since been dropped

MUNICIPALITY OF GREY HIGHLANDS - A Collingwood family out for a walk on a family-owned parcel of land in the Municipality of Grey Highlands were threatened by a neighbouring resident who accused them of trespassing.

On the morning of April 28, 2019, the family of four, which included two young children, were walking on a rural property located on South Line A in the Municipality of Grey Highlands when gunshots were fired over head by an unknown male.  

The suspect, who was standing approximately 20 feet from the fence row fired several shots into the air after yelling at them that they were trespassing.

The family returned to their vehicle and notified police. There were no injuries reported.

As a result of the police investigation, [a 46-year-old man from Grey Highlands] was arrested and charged with the following firearm related offences:

  • Careless Use of Firearm, Weapon, Prohibited Device or Ammunition
  • Pointing a Firearm
  • Breach of Firearms Regulation - Store Firearm or Restricted Weapon

He is scheduled to appear in court on May 16, 2019 in Owen Sound.
