The junior boys basketball team from Jean Vanier Catholic High School won their first GBSSA Championship title, taking it with a win against the four-time defending championships.

Vanier Storm won 55-47 on their home court against four-time GBSSA championship winners from Gravenhurst on Friday, Feb. 22. The gym was standing room only as all the students participated in a buyout to watch the championship game.

"Jean Vanier juniors started out slow by going down by eight in the first quarter under a tough full court press," said Steve Wierzbicki, coach and physical education teacher. "The boys responded by playing solid defence and slowing Gravenhurst down ... after being down by as many as 10 in the third, the boys battled back for the win."

Coach Wierzbicki said the team was propped up by an energetic home crowd and solid conditioning in practice this year. He had the help of Coach Vic Juzenas to help get the team ready for playoffs.
