Declan DiFrangia isn’t as tired as he should be. The Grade 10 Our Lady of the Bay Catholic High School (OLB) student just competed at OFSAA Track and Field on June 4 and 5 at York University in the 100- and 200-metre junior boys sprints.

He has already accomplished a milestone — he is the first OLB student to go to OFSAA in track and field for sprinting. He earned a personal best in both events: 10.48 seconds in the 100-metre sprint, just missing the finals, and 23.10 seconds in the 200-metre sprint, placing him as the seventh fastest 16-year-old in the province in that event. (For a frame of reference, Canadian Olympic champion Andre De Grasse runs the 200-metre in 19.62 seconds.)

After he raced, DiFrangia didn’t go home to rest — he met his soccer team for a tournament and played five games. When asked about his weekend, he smiles in his good-natured way and shrugs. “I just like running, I guess.”

Community coaches Kevin Wessinger, Nathan Gailitis and Vic Juzenas, along with the OLB coaching staff, couldn’t be more proud of Declan’s accomplishments, and they can’t wait to see what he, and all track and field athletes at OLB, can do next year.
