The Clearview Youth Centre has received $10,000 from the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital’s Wellness Innovation Fund to offer free Lifesaving Society courses and open swims at the Centennial Pool over the next two years.

CGMH’s Wellness Innovation Fund awards grants on an annual basis for innovative projects that focus on health and wellness in South Georgian Bay, the township said in a news release.

It brings together the Collingwood Hospital Foundation and Hospital, healthcare service providers, and community wellness stakeholders to find innovative ways to keep the community healthy and thriving.

Youth coordinator Courtney Rogers said she's proud the centre will be able to contribute to keeping youth safe around water.

There are approximately 152 drowning deaths a year in Ontario, she noted.

For every fatal drowning in Ontario, there are nearly four non-fatal drownings that are serious enough to require an emergency department visit.

Non-fatal drowning rates are highest among children and youth.

“We recognize that there are financial barriers to participating in Lifesaving Society courses for some of our youth and are proud to do our part to help keep Clearview youth safe around the water with the help of CGMH’s Wellness Innovation Fund,” Rogers said.

Registration details will be available online beginning June 5 at this link.
