Youth musicians earn top marks at music competition

Local musicians return from Kiwanis competition with gold certificates.

The Bay Youth Ensemble is pleased to announce its receipt of a gold certificate in the Community Ensemble class with a score of 88 at the Kiwanis Festival of Music in Owen Sound last week.

The ensemble led by musical director Keiko Kuepfer and assisted by Susan Connolly is comprised of winds, strings and brass players ranging in age from eight to eighteen. It was their first time performing at the festival and they hope to return again next year.

Members of the ensemble also took home a gold in the brass and winds duet class, with Ethan Sanders and Angus Campbell receiving a score of 85. Members Jaydon Klein and Sunny Valdez received a score of 89 earning them a gold certificate for their performance of “Old Joe Clark” in the duet class.

“We are proud of our students’ performance, they worked very hard in rehearsals,” remarked Kuepfer as she presented the certificate to the group.

The Bay Youth Ensemble will open for renown pianist Daniel Wnukowski at his fundraiser on April 27 at All Saints’ Anglican Church and are planning a spring concert for June 16 at the Simcoe Street Theatre.
