You can now apply to rent one of the new county-owned apartments in Collingwood

There are 147 rental units available at lower-than-market value rates.

You can now get your name on a list for the new county-owned apartments being built in Collingwood.

Simcoe County is accepting applications for the apartments now, which will be affordable units for rent at a rate lower than market value.

Rental costs will be $648 for a one bedroom, $763 for a two bedroom, and $847 for a three-bedroom unit. All rental costs are plus utilities, and will increase annually based on provincial guidelines.

There are currently two apartment buildings under construction. The one at 485 Second Street is a senior’s building, and units will only be offered to renters 60 years of age or older. The building is five storeys with 92 single-bedroom apartments on the second through fifth floor and commercial space underneath, which will include an office for the Simcoe County Housing Corporation and other potential tenants such as the Simcoe County District School Board Adult Learning Centre and Simcoe County Community Services.

The second building, located at 475 Second Street is six storeys and will include 55 units ranging from one to three-bedroom for adults and families.

In the two buildings, there are 147 units in total. There are some accessible units available for tenants in a wheelchair or who require other accessible accommodation.

To qualify for a Simcoe County Housing affordable unit, an applicant’s total household income must be less than $49,500 a year, and total household assets cannot exceed $50,000.

To be selected for the adult/family building at least one member of the household must be 16 years of age or older, and for the senior building, at least one member of the household must be 60 years at the time of offer. You may be put on a waiting list for the building at 57 years-old.

Applications must be submitted by mail only during the initial offering.
