Student-organized hockey day raises more than $1,000 for hospital

Ten elementary schools participated with teams of their own, and Mountainview took the top spot.

Collingwood Collegiate Institute’s (CCI) hockey teacher said the recent tournament organized and hosted by his class was a great success.

Todd Hammond said the event raised more than $1,250 for the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital, in addition to giving local elementary school students a chance to play hockey with their classmates.

Hockey Day in Collingwood took place on Jan. 16, and featured 10 teams from elementary schools across the region as well as two exhibition games in the evening.

Mountainview Elementary School defeated Stayner Collegiate Institute’s Grade 7 and 8 team in the final, winning by one point for a final score of 6-5.

Worsley Elementary won the consolation game against Admiral Collingwood.

In the evening, the CCI girls team won over the team from Jean Vanier Catholic School. The Vanier boys won over CCI’s boys team.

Proceeds raised from the hospital came in from donations collected during the day.

“We would like to thank Collingwood town council for their support of this great event that truly promotes active participation in sport and brings out great school spirit,” said Hammond.

The day was organized by the CCI hockey class, taught by Hammond, and is part of the course material focused on leadership and sports organization.
