A change in waste collection days is coming down the pipe in March and is expected to impact about 5,500 homes in Simcoe County.

During Tuesday’s (Jan. 31) committee of the whole meeting, County of Simcoe councillors were told some shifting would be occurring in the county’s curbside waste collection schedule, as the county is expecting to see strain on the Thursday schedule.

Starting in March, five routes in Adjala-Tosorontio will be shifted from Thursdays to Wednesdays, two routes in Clearview will be shifted from Wednesdays to Mondays and three routes in Collingwood will be shifted from Wednesdays to Mondays.

“These changes are necessary in order to achieve better balance in collections, as well as build some capacity for future growth,” wrote Jill Fairchild, project co-ordinator, in her report to councillors.

The three Collingwood routes are in the northwest end including the subdivision off Cranberry Trail East and West and to Silver Glenn Boulevard, the Dawson Drive area, and the Mair Mills area. For maps of the changing routes in Collingwood, click here.

At present, county staff have said the Thursday collection day has the highest number of serviced units, and experiences the latest completion time for collection, particularly on recycling weeks. As Thursday routes have the greatest potential for unit growth, the county’s contractor Miller Waste has identified the best routes to shift days.

Approximately 2,176 households will be impacted by the change from Thursday routes and 3,324 households will be impacted by the change from Wednesday routes.

During conversation at the council table on Tuesday, Clearview Mayor Doug Measures asked about the communication plan on the change.

“Given that the media that cover the village of Stayner is limited or non-existent, how exactly are you going to be communicating this change?” asked Measures.

General Manager of Engineering, Planning and Environment Rob Elliott told councillors that the changes will be communicated through targeted addressed mail, as well as notices being placed on the carts of each property prior to the change.

Measures asked that the county also work with the Clearview communications team.

As the cities of Barrie and Orillia have their own waste collection contracts separate from the County of Simcoe, residents of those cities will not be impacted by this change.
