This weekend, a Collingwood audience will be transported to Granada, Spain thanks to one musician’s passion for Flamenco music.
David Sinclair was born and raised in Toronto, but he fell in love with Spanish flamenco and moved to be closer to it.
“I had become totally engrossed by it,” Sinclair told CollingwoodToday. He moved to Granada in 2005. He still lives there, but has a connection to Collingwood through his step daughter who owns a clothing boutique in town.
Sinclair was here in 2016 performing on his guitar and is returning this weekend for a show at the Simcoe Street Theatre.
“What drew me to flamenco was overall the rhythm, the technique and passion of the music,” said Sinclair, who achieved a degree in classical guitar performance from Wilfred Laurier University. “The left-hand technique between classical and flamenco guitar playing is very similar but the right-hand technique (picking/plucking) is very different.”
Sinclair will be performing his own compositions this weekend, but he said it’s a good show for both those who are new to Flamenco and those who know it well. Sinclair will be explaining what flamenco is, where it came from and he will explain each of the songs he plays.
“The audience can expect to hear what flamenco guitar sounds like nowadays, especially from Granada,” said Sinclair. “Each region in Andalucia has its own unique style and Granada is no exception.”
Sinclair performs at 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 21 at the Simcoe Street Theatre. Admission is $18, and tickets can be purchased online here.
