Trail use is up this summer, but so are the conflicts between different users.

"Some of the complaints that the town has received are about dogs not being on a leash, pedestrians walking side by side (physical distancing) across the trail, and cyclists speeding and not signalling their presence when passing slower walkers," states a post on the Town of Collingwood website.

The Town of Collingwood has been urging people to share the trails with a trail etiquette campaign.

In addition to signs posted on the town's recreation trails reminding users to share the space, the town has posted a notice to its website.

"While it is very encouraging to see more families using the trails, the additional traffic can create conflicts among the diverse user groups," states the notice.

The town is reminding trail users of proper etiquette for sharing the space including:

  • Walkers stay to the right of the trail
  • Dog walkers keep your pets on a leash
  • Cyclists control your speed and sound a warning when passing walkers from behind
  • Remember pedestrians always have the right of way

"Our trails are multi-use facilities and we must all be sensitive to the needs of all user groups," states the town website. "Please share the trail."
