School bus driver charged after Innisfil crash

INNISFIL - South Simcoe Police Service officers have charged a school bus driver after a two-vehicle collision in Innisfil sent several students to hospital.

On Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2018 around 7:45 a.m., officers were called to the intersection of 5th Sideroad and 4th Line for a collision involving a school bus and a pickup truck. 

Members of the Innisfil Fire and Rescue Service, County of Simcoe Paramedics, York Region Paramedics and Inspectors from the Ministry of Transportation also responded to the collision.

Officers arrived on scene and found the school bus on its side. Fourteen students from Nantyr Shores Secondary School were on board when the crash occurred. 

Three students were taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, including one student who was airlifted to a Toronto hospital by ORNGE Air Ambulance. Other students and drivers from both vehicles were taken to local hospitals as a precaution.

The intersection was closed for approximately five hours while three Collision Reconstructionist from the Traffic Unit conducted their investigation and gathered evidence. Officials from the Ministry of Transportation and a licensed mechanic also assisted by conducting a mechanical examination of both vehicles.   

At this time excessive speed and mechanical failure have been ruled out as a cause.

A 73-year-old Barrie man has been charged with Disobey a Stop Sign - Fail to Stop. He will be appearing in court in November.
