Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) officially opened its newly renovated Medical Device Reprocessing Department (MDRD), including a 1,400 square foot addition, with a ribbon-cutting celebration.
The MDRD department focuses on sterilization, preparation and storage of medical equipment, instruments and supplies and as a result is directly involved in every surgical procedure that takes place at the health centre. The highly-skilled MDRD team are trained in the safe handling of instruments, infection control and sterilizing techniques.
“The completion of this important project ensures our patients continue to receive safe, high-quality care,” says Janice Skot, RVH president and CEO.
The renovation, which took 15 weeks to complete, features state-of-the art Automated Endoscope Reprocessors (AERs) which improves the quality control of scope reprocessing. RVH’s Surgical Treatment Clinics, Endoscopy/Cystoscopy and Ultrasound also completed renovations which increased the efficiency of their medical device reprocessing processes.
MDRD functions 24/7, 365 days a year providing sterile equipment for nearly 80,000 patient cases in the OR, Endoscopy, Surgery Treatment Clinics and other areas. This translates to millions of pieces of equipment being processed through the department on an annual basis.
“Due to the dedication and commitment of the MDRD and Planning teams, not one single procedure was cancelled and not one instrument tray was missed during the whole renovation period,” says Skot. “This is truly an example of team work and our commitment to safety.”
