Police make arrest, seize vehicle in Barrie fatal hit-and-run probe

Police seized a vehicle on Owen Street and have charged a 37-year-old Barrie man

Barrie police have made an arrest and seized a suspect vehicle following a fatal hit-and-run investigation.

Around 5 p.m., Thursday, city police seized a vehicle on Owen Street between Wellington and Grove streets that is believed to have been involved in a collision that killed a local man.

At approximately 2:45 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 1, city police responded to a report of an injured man who had been found at the intersection of Wellington and Toronto streets near downtown Barrrie.

Investigators determined that 33-year-old Barrie resident Luke Crocker was the victim of a fail-to-remain collision.

Crocker was transported to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.

As a result of an exhaustive investigation that was conducted by the Barrie police traffic unit and following up on information that was received late Thursday afternoon, a 37-year-old Barrie man has been arrested and charged with failure to remain at the scene of an accident causing death under the Criminal Code.

Barrie police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon tells BarrieToday it was information from the public which led to the arrest of the suspect.

“Police received information late Thursday afternoon and were able to locate the vehicle and arrested a male in connection with the fail to remain,” said Leon. “The driver was operating the vehicle at the time of the arrest.”

The accused, whose name has not been released by police, is scheduled to appear in a Barrie court on Wednesday, Dec. 18.
