OPP evacuate some Collingwood homes over suspicious package

The OPP explosives disposal unit has been called in

UPDATE JUNE 27: Constable Martin Hachey said the package has been removed from the residence but investigation is still ongoing. The original warrant was executed by Peel Regional Police with the assistance of Collingwood OPP.

OPP have blocked off a portion of Davis Street and evacuated "several" residences in the area after discovering a suspicious package.

Const. Martin Hachey from Collingwood OPP said the street crimes unit was in the area conducting a search warrant when they discovered the package.

Though the package has not been confirmed as an explosive item, police are "taking no chances to ensure the safety of residents in the area," said Hachey.

The OPP explosives disposal unit was dispatched to the scene to dispose of the package.

Residents will be notified once it is safe to return to their homes. The public is asked to avoid the area.
