Ontario reports 2,791 new COVID cases Tuesday

Today's report includes 3,323 recoveries and 25 deaths, and 150 new hospitalizations

Public Health Ontario has reported 2,791 new cases of COVID-19 today (May 4). 

Today's report includes 3,323 recoveries and 25 new deaths.

Today's deaths include two people between 20 and 39 years old, three people between 40 and 59 years old, five people between 60 and 79 years old, and 15 people over 79 years old. Nine of the deaths reported today were residents of long-term care homes.

Since yesterday, the province has reported 150 new hospitalizations and 33 new admissions of COVID-19 patients to intensive care units.

The May 4 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:

  • 36,440 active cases, which is down from 36,997 yesterday. 
  • 2,167 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, up from 1,925 reported yesterday. 
  • There are 886 patients in intensive care units because of COVID-19 (down from 889 yesterday) and 609 COVID patients on ventilators (down from 611 reported yesterday).
  • The province reported 33,740 tests were processed yesterday resulting in a 9.1 per cent positivity rate. 
  • Another 25,049 tests are still under investigation and/or being processed. To date, 14.2 million tests have been completed.
  • Of the new cases reported today, 931 are from Toronto, 653 cases are from Peel, 275 are from York Region, and 52 are from Simcoe-Muskoka.
  • Today's cases include 469 individuals aged 19 and under, 1,199 people between 20 and 39 years old, 778 people between 40 and 59 years old, 306 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 40 people aged 80 and over.

Vaccines

  • There were 88,871 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 administered on May 3, which is up from 53,880 on May 2.
  • As of 6 p.m. on May 3, the province reported 5,467,120 doses of vaccine against COVID-19 have been administered.
  • In total, 378,085 people have been fully vaccinated.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 476,692 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 432,109 recoveries and 8,143 deaths, of which 3,928 were individuals living in long-term care facilities.

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 3,206.9 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario.

Ontario's average weekly incidence rate is 167 cases per 100,000 people, which is down by 11.5 per cent from last week (April 18 to April 24).

Simcoe-Muskoka 

Yesterday, the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit reported 281 new COVID cases in its first update since Friday. 

There are 1,585 active, lab-confirmed cases in the region. Of those, 1,183 are confirmed variant strains. 

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 10,655 cases of COVID-19 with 8,374 of those cases recovered and 225 cases ending in death. 

There are 49 people from Simcoe County and two people from Muskoka hospitalized with COVID-19.

To date, 199,570 people in Simcoe-Muskoka region have received their first dose of vaccination against COVID-19, which is about 32 per cent of the region's population. About three per cent of the population has received two doses of vaccine. 

The weekly incidence rate for Simcoe-Muskoka region is 92.7 cases per 100,000 people, which is down by 14.7 per cent compared to the week of April 18 to 24.
