No recycling next week ... and other changes coming to Collingwood's garbage collection

Garbage week is Feb. 3, and recycling week is Feb. 10, and they will alternate like that from now on

Collingwood residents, this is the last week you’ll be putting out your garbage and recycling at the same time.

Starting Monday (Feb. 3) the County of Simcoe will be switching to a new curbside collection schedule that reduces garbage and recycling pick-up to alternating weeks. Green bin (organics) pick-up will still occur weekly.

The county announced the changes in December, stating the new schedule would assist the contractor with staffing challenges by reducing the number of drivers required each day.

On Feb. 3, residents of Collingwood can put out garbage and organics for curbside pickup. Under the new schedule, you may put out double the amount of garbage (two-bags) as previously accepted on the former weekly schedule. Extra bags must be tagged with a County of Simcoe garbage tag ($3).

The county organics program will continue to accept pet waste provided it is contained in a bag marked compostable. Plastic or bio-degradable bags are not permitted in the green bin. The maximum weight allowance per green bin is 44 kg, but you may purchase more than one bin from the county.

Green bins will be collected every week.

Recycling pick up will alternate with garbage. The first recycling curbside collection day in Collingwood will be Feb. 10. You will no longer be required to separate blue and grey bin recyclables, as sorting will be done at the plant.

Corrugated cardboard boxes should be flattened and tied in bundles and shredded paper must be placed in a clear bag. All other recyclable materials from paper to containers can be placed in your recycling bin at the curb.

Black plastic is not recyclable (and hasn’t been in the past) because the optical sorters at the recycling facility confuse this item with the conveyor belts.

Collections will alternate on this schedule moving forward. Collection days are not changing; however, collection times will be adjusted. Residents are reminded to have materials out to their curb by 7 a.m. on their regular collection day.
