Collingwood’s recently elected council has one meeting under its belt, and members have been assigned to standing committees and boards.

At a Strategic Initiatives Committee meeting on Dec. 12, one of the items on the agenda was to split councillors up onto the various standing committees, a decision which still has to be finalized by council.

The committees are often the first place a discussion on a town matter will happen, with input from the public, and from there the committee sends a recommendation to council.

The Development and Operations Committee typically handles issues related to land use planning and development, heritage, transportation, infrastructure, and water and wastewater services. This year’s suggested appointees include: Mayor Brian Saunderson, Deputy Mayor Keith Hull, Coun. Deb Doherty, Coun. Yvonne Hamlin, and Coun. Kathy Jeffery.

Saunderson and Jeffery also sat on the committee last term of council.

The Corporate and Community Services Committee will discuss and provide recommendations to council on matters related to general administration, financial and corporate policies, human resources, emergency management, communications, information technology, accessibility, parks, recreation and culture, marketing and business development, and by-law development/enforcement.

This year, the five suggested appointees include Mayor Brian Saunderson, Coun. Mariane McLeod, Coun. Tina Comi, Coun. Steve Berman, and Coun. Bob Madigan.

There are no returning members for this committee.

Other appointments made at the Strategic Initiatives Committee to be finalized by council include:

  • Coun. Berman to the Collingwood Public Library Board

  • Mayor Saunderson and Coun. Jeffery to the Police Services Board

  • Coun. Madigan to the Sports Hall of Fame

  • Coun. Comi to the Collingwood BIA Board of Management

  • Coun. McLeod to the Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority

  • Mayor Saunderson, Coun. Doherty and the town CAO or a designate to the EPCOR/Town Advisory Committee

  • Deputy Mayor Hull to the Simcoe County Alliance to End Homelessness.

There is also a motion before council to appoint Coun. McLeod as the alternate member of Simcoe County Council. As the alternate member, McLeod would attend meetings on behalf of Collingwood when Mayor Saunderson or Deputy Mayor Hull are unable to attend.

The appointments will be made official by council vote on Dec. 17 at the first meeting of the new council, which takes place at 5 p.m. at town hall.
