Though the labyrinth building phase is complete, the work isn’t over.

Volunteers from the Collingwood Labyrinth committee have returned to the site today for some upkeep work on the grounds. The labyrinth was opened in October 2015, and the landscaping was finished November 2017.

Jack Marley, one of the lead volunteers who worked to get the labyrinth built in Harbourview Park, said the landscaping cost about $17,000, which had already been fundraised as part of the cost of building the labyrinth. The total cost for the site was about $165,000, and all of it was raised through community donations.

The landscaping included planting various shrubs and plants that will flower at different times of the year to keep the site full of colour. However, some of the new plants have already gone missing, including 12 dogwood plants that appear to have been scooped out of the soil and carted off.

Marley said the committee has some donations still coming in for upkeep of the site, so they will be able to use those funds to replace the missing plants.

Marley and the other labyrinth volunteers have committed to returning at least once a month this year to keep up on the weeds growing around the labyrinth, but he’s hoping once the plants grow bigger and there’s a little more mulch in the area, the site will become more self-maintaining.

The labyrinth is open to the public and the entire path is about 800 metres long from start to finish. The site overlooks Georgian Bay and is adjacent to the Collingwood Arboretum along the Harbourview trail system.
