On this International Women’s Day, the Collingwood Museum is pleased to announce the launch of a new line of vintage-inspired apparel celebrating local history.

The first design in the series honours the local women who donned welding helmets at the Collingwood Shipyards during the Second World War.

These women worked long hours, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., six days per week. Frequently, they returned to work after dinner and continued until midnight with no overtime pay.

To protect themselves from toxic fumes, they were required to drink a pint of milk each day. They were instrumental in the Shipyards’ wartime production of more than 30 ships and endured the hardships of life in the ‘Yard.

The historic photograph that has been incorporated into the “This is Women’s Work” design is held in the Collingwood Museum’s impressive photograph collection.

Shirts may be purchased over the phone for curbside pick-up starting on Monday, March 8, or may be purchased in-person by appointment during regular business hours. T-shirts are available for $29.95 plus HST and three-quarter sleeve baseball t-shirts for $34.95 plus HST. Please call staff for sizing details and all other inquiries.

Follow the Collingwood Museum on Facebook to stay up to date with the museum’s operation during COVID-19 as well as important news about additional apparel designs.
