Memory of dog inspires annual donation to animal shelter

Since opening in 2014, Collingwood Olive Oil has donated a portion of their October sale proceeds to the GTHS in memory of their pet, Hera

A local business is keeping the memory of their beloved pet alive with an annual gift to the animal shelter in her name.

In 2014, when Alex Yuen and Cheryl McMenemy were in the process of renovating and opening their store, Collingwood Olive Oil Co., their 12-year-old dog, a white shepherd named Hera, died.

In October of their first year in business, McMenemy decided to hold a fundraiser for the Georgian Triangle Humane Society in memory of Hera. She declared $1 from every bottle of olive oil sold that month would be donated to the shelter to help with operating costs.

"We have been doing it ever since," said Yuen.

This year, the Hera Fund raised $1,120 for the GTHS, bringing the grand total since 2014 to $7,138 in donations to the GTHS in memory of Hera.
