A local organization created to support people living with Parkinson's disease is taking its mission outdoors for an inaugural festival designed to link people living with and affected by the disease.

Living Better with Parkinson's is hosting the South Georgian Bay Parkinson's Festival in Thornbury's Bayview Park later this month.

“Living Better prides itself on cultivating local partnerships to better support people living with Parkinson’s Disease in this region," said C. Ian Ross, the board of director’s chair, in a news release. "The festival will do just that along with attracting experts from other parts of Ontario. We are thrilled with the response and support to date and hope that event will become an annual event.”

According to the organizers, the festival is meant to bring like-minded people from the South Georgian Bay region and beyond together who are interested in sharing stories, learning, and meeting new people connected to the Parkinson’s community.

The event takes place June 24 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

According to the news release from Living Better, over the next decade, 1.5 per cent to 2 per cent of the population over 60 years will live with Parkinson’s Disease in North America. The South Georgian Bay population is growing rapidly, and the demographics are aging as it attracts more residents to the area. In this decade, People with Parkinson’s in South Georgian Bay are expected to double.

Living Better with Parkinson’s is a grassroots organization committed to increasing the quality of life of people living with Parkinson’s Disease and their caregivers in south Georgian Bay.  Promoting daily physical activity, advocacy and education are the primary pillars ensuring that Living Better's mission is achieved.
