History group hopes to reconnect through upcoming conference

'Our keynote speaker Dave Patterson is certainly a big selling point for us. His approach is somewhat controversial, I understand, but the subject is dispelling the myths of 1492,' says organizer

Take a step back in time next month at the Simcoe County Historical Association’s inaugural History Conference.

The event, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 10, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Simcoe County Museum, includes keynote speaker Dave Patterson as well as interesting, relevant historical vignettes, behind-the-scenes tours, explained event co-ordinator and association secretary Donna Wice.

“It’s something we have been thinking about for quite some time, simply because our Simcoe County Historical Association (SCHA) was lacking in some impact and lacking in some connections with people,” she told BarrieToday. “At the heart of this (event) it was (about) connecting with our local historical group, museums, heritage groups, and anyone interested in history.”

The theme of the event is 'Where History Lives Again' and the goal is to cover topics that are important in this day and age.

“Our keynote speaker Dave Patterson is certainly a big selling point for us. His approach is somewhat controversial, I understand, but the subject is dispelling the myths of 1492. He retells stories as he knows them of European settlers and Indians, and he does use the word 'Indians' so that’s what we are using to promote his speech," Wice said.

"But he’s identified so many things to this day that we can credit to the First Nations people,” she added. “I think it will focus on all of Canada, but specifically those points that have affected Simcoe County.”

Although the event has been geared toward local historical associations, Wice noted the conference is open to anyone who has a keen interest in the area's deep historical roots.

“Anyone remotely interested in history is very welcome to come. We still have openings. … They are shrinking down, but we still have some. We are hoping everyone gets something from this event. Actually seeing people… and sharing history’s stories and that general connection,” she said. “We are looking forward to making connections and enjoying a day surrounded by like-minded people.”

Registration costs $20 and closes Aug. 31. Participants can get more information or register by visiting www.simcoecountyhistory.ca/history-conference and following the link.
