Blood Services stresses that new donors are needed, and walk-ins are welcome.

The Government of Canada website says it takes five donors to provide blood for someone who requires heart surgery. It can take up to 50 donors to provide blood for a person seriously hurt in a car crash, and a person going through treatment for leukemia requires blood from eight donors per week.

According to the Government of Canada website, approximately half of Canadians are fit to donate blood. Last year, one in 60 Canadiands gave blood, and organ donation rates remain low compared to other countries such as the United States.
