A Collingwood boardwalk trail destroyed by a fire in May will remain closed until next year.

The town’s director of parks, recreation and culture Dean Collver said he expects repairs to the boardwalk by the arboretum to begin in Spring 2019.

“We are still working through the possibility of insurance coverage for the damage and are conducting a structural assessment at this time,” said Collver, adding the town must follow a procurement process for the repairs.

The boardwalk trail connected to Collingwood’s arboretum caught fire on the evening of May 9 this year. Collingwood’s Deputy Fire Chief Dan Thurman said the cause of the fire was a bonfire left unattended in the adjacent field.

The fire destroyed about 100 feet of the boardwalk trail at Harbourview Park and the trail has been closed ever since.
