There are several events planned in Collingwood to mark International Women’s Day in March this year.

The events culminate with a panel discussion and networking social on women’s day (March 8). According to the town’s website, the panel discussion takes place at Simcoe Street Theatre from 2 to 4 p.m. and will aim to inform and inspire all genders through exploration of what it means to be a gender-equal world.

Tickets for the event are $15, and proceeds will be donated to My Friend’s House.

According to the town website, nobody will be turned away due to their inability to pay. If you would like to attend, but can’t purchase a ticket, email Amanda Norris.

There will also be a childcare option for those attending the panel event. The Collingwood Museum is offering a free two-hour program for children aged 6-12 in the Free Schools World Literacy Room. You can find more information on that here.

Panelists for the Sunday event include four women of different career and cultural backgrounds with moderator Catherine Thompson, an on-air newscaster, reporter, and emcee with 97.7 Max FM.

The panel will include Asha Frost, who is an Anishinaabe (Ojibway) medicine woman, healther, and spiritual mentor. She’s a member of the Chippewas of Nawash First Nation.

Lt. (N) Jen Martin will also be a panellist at the International Women’s Day event. As a member of the Canadian Armed Forces as a Maritime Surface Officer, she was deployed to Afghanistan where she recruited and created training for local women and helped provide school supplies for students.

Katherine Gyles will join the panel to share from her experience as the executive vice president of corporate strategy and talent for Parkbridge.

Carolynn Wilson is the final panellist. She’s a Collingwood resident and member of Heritage Community Church. She and her sister Sylvia Wilson own and operate the Sheffield Park Black History and Cultural Museum in Clarksburg.

Local International Women’s Day celebrations will begin before Sunday’s event, with a flag-raising and community social kicking-off four days of activities beginning Thursday, March 5.

The flag will be raised at Collingwood Public Library at 1 p.m. and will include music, poetry, and refreshments.

Later that evening (5 p.m.) Lisa Kang’ethe will be hosting a Women and Wealth seminar, location to be announced. You can email [email protected] for more information.

On Friday, March 6, Dr. Jennifer Corey will host a workshop all about care for pelvic and low back pain. The free session begins at 10 a.m. at Synergy Health and Wellness Centre (150 First Street, Unit D).

Theatre Collingwood is bringing back the Girls Nite Out event on Friday night at 8 p.m. at the Collingwood Legion. Last year’s all-female comedy show sold out. For tickets, visit theatrecollingwood.ca.

On Saturday, March 7, women can get a little physical with a CrossFit class at CrossFit Indestri at 11 a.m. and a circus class (aerial silks, aerial hoop, trapeze, etc) at Collingwood Circus Club at 12:30 p.m. Both classes are free, but the CrossFit class requires advanced registration.
