Health unit reports 72 new COVID cases in Simcoe-Muskoka region today

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 72 new COVID-19 cases and two deaths in today's update (May 12).

The deaths reported today were both women, one was between 65 and 79 years old and she died on May 5. The second woman was over 79 years old and she died on May 8. One of the women was from Barrie and one was from Tiny Township. 

There are 822 active, lab-confirmed cases in the region, most of which are in Simcoe County.

The health unit has reported 3,937 variant cases confirmed to date, with 563 of those cases still active.

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 11,171 cases of COVID-19 with 9,571 of those cases recovered and 235 cases ending in death. 

There are 28 people from Simcoe County and two from Muskoka District hospitalized with COVID-19, which includes two new hospitalizations since yesterday's update.

To date, 229,233 people in Simcoe-Muskoka region have received their first dose of vaccination against COVID-19, which is about 36.8 per cent of the region's population. About 3.4 per cent of the population has received two doses of vaccine.

The new cases reported in Simcoe County and Muskoka District today include (case transmission is under investigation unless otherwise specified).

  • Wasaga Beach (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old whose case is linked to travel. 
  • Barrie (24): Two youth under 18 years old, 11 people between 18 and 34 years old, three people between 35 and 44 years old, six people between 45 and 64 years old, and two people between 65 and 79 years old. Seven cases are linked to close contact transmission, three are listed as community-acquired, and one is outbreak-related.
  • Springwater (2): One person between 18 and 34 years old and one person between 45 and 64 years old. One case is linked to close contact. 
  • Innisfil (10): Two people between 35 and 44 years old, six people between 45 and 64 years old, and two people between 65 and 79 years old. Seven cases are linked to close contact transmission, and one is outbreak-related.
  • Bradford West Gwillimbury (13): Four youth under 18 years old, three people between 18 and 34 years old, two people between 35 and 44 years old, three people between 45 and 64 years old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old. Two cases are linked to close contact transmission. 
  • Orillia (5): One youth under 18 years old, two people between 18 and 34 years old, one person between 35 and 44 years old, and one person between 45 and 64 years old. One case is outbreak-related.
  • Midland (1): One person between 45 and 64 years old.
  • Tay (1): One youth under 18 years old whose case is linked to close contact.
  • Tiny (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old. 
  • Penetanguishene (1): One person between 65 and 79 years old.
  • Essa (3): Two people between 18 and 34 years old and one person between 45 and 64 years old. Two cases were community-acquired.
  • New Tecumseth (7): Two youth under 18 years old, three people between 18 and 34 years old, one person between 35 and 44 years old, and one person between 45 and 64 years old. Three cases were community-acquired, and two were linked to close contact.
  • There are three new cases in Muskoka, all are from Bracebridge.

The health unit does sometimes remove a case or move them based on further investigation of location data. The chart below reflects updated totals for each municipality as reported by the health unit on May 12).
