Health unit confirms 108 new COVID cases in Simcoe-Muskoka Tuesday

An outbreak has been declared at Collingwood Collegiate Institute with cases dating back to before schools closed

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 108 new COVID-19 cases and two deaths in today's update (April 20).

The deaths reported today include an Orillia and an Innisfil resident.

The health unit has declared a COVID-19 outbreak at Collingwood Collegiate Institute with two confirmed cases linked to the school. While the schools are currently closed for most in-person learning, the health unit will declare outbreaks even when the cases date back to before the schools closed.

There are 1,144 active, lab-confirmed cases in the region, most of which are in Simcoe County.

The health unit has reported 2,357 variant cases confirmed to date, with 581 of those cases still active.

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 9,558 cases of COVID-19 with 7,796 of those cases recovered and 218 cases ending in death. 

There are 46 people from Simcoe County and one person from Muskoka hospitalized with COVID-19, which includes 11 new hospitalizations since Friday. 

To date, 143,050 people in Simcoe-Muskoka region have received their first dose of a vaccination against COVID-19, which is about 22 per cent of the region's population. 

The new cases reported in Simcoe County and Muskoka District today include (case transmission is under investigation unless otherwise specified): 

  • Wasaga Beach (4): One youth under 18 years old, one person between 45 and 64 years old, and two people between 65 and 79 years old. Two cases are linked to close contact.
  • Clearview (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old.
  • Barrie (46): Nine youth under 18 years old, 17 people between 18 and 34 years old, four people between 35 and 44 years old, 12 people between 45 and 64 years old, and four people between 65 and 79 years old. Nine cases are linked to close contact, five were community-acquired, and one was outbreak-related. 
  • Springwater (2): One youth under 18 years old and one person between 45 and 64 years old. 
  • Innisfil (10): Three youth under 18 years old, five people between 18 and 34 years old, two people between 45 and 64 years old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old. One case is linked to close contact.
  • Bradford West Gwillimbury (24): Four youth under 18 years old, four people between 18 and 34 years old, four people between 35 and 44 years old, eight people between 45 and 64 years old, two people between 65 and 79 years old, and two people over 79 years old. Four cases are linked to close contact and one is outbreak-related. 
  • Tiny (1): One person between 45 and 64 years old.
  • Essa (6): Two youth under 18 years old, two people between 18 and 34 years old, and two people between 45 and 64 years old. One case was linked to close contact.
  • New Tecumseth (10): Three people between 18 and 34 years old, two people between 35 and 44 years old, four people between 45 and 64 years old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old. One case is linked to close contact. 
  • Adjala-Tosorontio (3): Three people between 45 and 64 years old. 
  • One case is listed with location information as "out-of-province."
