Mayor Brian Saunderson presented individual certificates and congratulations to members of the Collingwood Canadians U16 girls soccer team for their victory at an international tournament in Italy earlier this year.

The competitive soccer team based in Collingwood is the first Canadian women's team to win the tournament, which took place in Agropoli, Italy from April 15 to 20.

Head coach Mike Gallo spoke to council last night (Sept. 16) to thank the team, the families, and the community for the hard work to prepare for the tournament, which included a year and a half of fundraising efforts.

The Collingwood Canadians U16 girls soccer team competed against teams from Poland, Colombia, Italy, U.S., and Slovakia.

"It was a fantastic championship for Canada," said Gallo at the council meeting. "It was very memorable for me ... and we all had a great time."

Mayor Saunderson presented each member of the team with a certificate of congratulations during the council meeting.
