A local business owner is opening her doors for a special gathering on Sunday in honour of those who died when a plane was shot down over Tehran on Jan. 8.

Susan Jamieson, CEO of Red Scarf Equestrian, is hosting a drop-in event on Sunday where people will be able to sign a book of condolences, have a refreshment, and mourn with neighbours.

Jamieson said she was inspired, in part, by her parents, both of whom lived in Britain during the Second World War.

"Our past history makes us more understanding of situations," said Jamieson. "My parents showed extreme kindness in exceptional situations."

After hearing about the plane crash, she wanted to help in some way.

Originally Jamieson wanted to open up her space to Iranian families mourning the loss of their fellow countrymen, but she said she was reminded Canada lost people in the plane crash too.

"I appreciated being reminded it's not just an Iranian, but a Canadian tragedy too," said Jamieson. "Community is great, because collectively we can greet tragedy and joy together ... we can celebrate and mourn as a community together."

On Sunday afternoon (Jan. 19) members of the public are invited to stop by Red Scarf Equestrian at the All Saints' Anglican Church Rectory on 75 Ontario Street, between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.
