Collingwood Fire Department will have a new chief starting July 1, but he's no stranger.

Deputy Fire Chief Dan Thurman will be promoted to fire chief following current Chief Ross Parr's retirement.

Parr announced earlier this year he would be retiring on June 30 after nearly four decades in fire service. Parr was the deputy chief in Collingwood from January 2009 until he was promoted to fire chief in January 2017.

Collingwood council confirmed Thurman's appointment as chief during the May 16 meeting.

Thurman has been with the local department since 1994 when he started as a volunteer firefighter. He worked as a full-time firefighter in Mississauga simultaneously before joining the Collingwood department full time in 2002.

"Dan has worked hard and proven his ability to lead the fire service team,” said Fire Chief Ross Parr in a town news release. “His knowledge of the town and dedication to his job will assist him leading the Collingwood Fire Department into the future.”
