GBHS issued a call for tenders to build a new hospital in Markdale earlier this summer. The bids have been reviewed, and today a Board-approved recommendation to award the construction contract was forwarded to the Ministry of Health for final approval.

The Ministry of Health is expected to approve the bid within the next few months. Once the contract is awarded, the name of the winning bid will be publicly announced. The start date for the project will be determined by the construction company, and it is anticipated that site preparations will begin this spring.

“We are checking off the milestones for this project, and getting ready to transition from the years of planning to physically building our new hospital,” said Gary Sims, GBHS President and CEO. “I commend and thank all involved - the project team, staff and physicians, generous donors, and community members – your continued commitment and perseverance is why we are one step away from seeing shovels go into the ground.”

Teams continue to meet regularly to work through the transition plans, and to ensure all phases of this two-year project are well coordinated. Regular project updates for the Centre Grey community are an important part of the process.

The new hospital is expected to cost approximately $70 million and will include 68,000 square feet of space and will include inpatient beds, a palliative care room, 24/7 emergency room with four exam and treatment areas, laboratory, diagnostic imaging services, physiotherapy, space for ambulatory care clinics, and two ambulance bays.
