Conservation Authority warns of potential flooding from heavy rains

Flood potential is low for now, monitoring of local watercourses is ongoing

The Pretty River is flowing fast and high today after days of heavy rainfall in the region.

The Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority (NVCA) is asking municipalities, emergency response agencies, and the public to remain alert over the next 24 hours as heavy rainfall could cause localized flooding in some areas of the watershed.

The NVCA issued a statement saying the flood potential is low, but flows in all watercourses are elevated.

"The slow-moving frontal system forecasted by the Surface Water Monitoring Centre of the Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry has moved eastward through our watershed over the past 24 hours," reads the statement from the NVCA. "The storm system has brought widespread rainfall to the area which will continue throughout Thursday. Total amounts between 40 mm to 80 mm can be expected and embedded thunderstorms could contribute to higher localized amounts."

Fast flowing water at elevated levels can be dangerous and there is a high risk of life-threatening injury if a person falls into the fast-moving water. Members of the public, and especially children are asked to stay away from the water.

The current statement is in effect until 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 24. The NVCA will continue to monitor the river and stream conditions and provides updates if warranted.
