Colts clinch playoff spot and earn shutout victory this weekend

The Collingwood Colts have officially secured a playoff spot in their first year as Collingwood’s Junior ‘A’ hockey team.

The league consists of 22 teams in four divisions. The Colts are currently second in the north division, and the top four teams of the division will compete in semi-final tournament followed by division finals and conference championships.

Meanwhile, regular season play continues, and the Colts will be fighting to hold onto second place heading into post-season tournaments.

The Collingwood Colts welcomed their fans to the Eddie Bush for date night as the Aurora Tigers arrived on Valentine’s Day.

The Colts opened the scoring in the first period with a goal from forward Nicholas Cirone (23).

His goal inspired five more in a shut-out for the Colts.

Patrick Brown (67) and Derek Sweeney (18) scored in the second period to bring their team to a 3-0 lead entering the third.

In the final frame, Collingwood doubled their score with goals from forward Payton Schaly (20), Captain Adrian Nabuurs, and another from Sweeney. The Colts finished the game with a 6-0 victory over Aurora.

Colts netminder Andrew Rose (31) gets credit for his second shutout of the season. He stopped all 22 shots he faced.

On Sunday, Feb. 16, the Mike Jackson GM Collingwood Colts made the trip to Pickering to battle the Panthers for a share of the North Division lead. Pickering is currently the top-ranked team in the division.

Collingwood gave up the lead in the first and were unable to claw their way back. Pickering scored three goals in the second period, Collingwood responded in the third with a goal from #71 Eric Lalonde with assists from Nicholas Cirone and Christian Taylor to break the shutout. Pickering took a 3-1 victory.

The game was not without milestones. Collingwood Colts forward #18 Derek Sweeney and defensemen #7 Owen Ledwell both skated in their 100th Ontario Junior Hockey League Games.
