Collingwood's newest crosswalk out of service until end of August

Due to vandalism the button to activate the crosswalk isn't working and it will take a while to get a replacement

An act of vandalism has left Collingwood's newest signalled crosswalk out of order, and it likely won't be working again until the end of August.

Peggy Slama, director of engineering, public works and environmental services for Collingwood, said the crosswalk at the Hamilton Drain Crossing on Hurontario Street was vandalized earlier this month.

The button pedestrians are supposed to push to activate the lights is not working anymore. The town has put bags over the lights and posted messages to say the crosswalk is out of order.

Slama said the town has contacted the supplier, but the replacement part won't get here for six to eight weeks due to COVID delays.

The town is having a contractor look at the button to see if it can be temporarily repaired in the meantime.

"Unfortunately it won't be working until the end of August," Slama told Collingwood council at a meeting earlier this week.

There is a traffic light to the south of the Hamilton Drain Crossing at Poplar Sideroad if people still want to cross Hurontario at a controlled intersection. There is also a traffic light to the north at Campbell and Lockhart Road, but the area is under construction.

The crosswalk, which intersects Hurontario Street at the Hamilton Drain Trail near the bowling alley, was installed in November 2019, after several months delay due to back-ordered parts. The crosswalk has a button on each side that is supposed to activate lights over the road indicating to cars they should stop for pedestrians.
