Collingwood Museum is marking Museum Month with two new offerings  – a podcast and some merch.

On May 4, the museum published the first episode of a new podcast called Stories From Another Day, which is hosted by museum volunteer Ken Maher.

"Having volunteered at the Museum for the past six years, I was regularly surprised by the rich and diverse stories of Collingwood's past,” said Maher in a news release. “Who would have thought our little town would have such a fascinating history?  I am sure others will be similarly enthralled, and I hope the listeners will enjoy hearing Collingwood's stories as much as I enjoy telling them."

The podcasts are available on any podcast streaming app. The next episode is coming out May 18 for International Museum Day. Here’s the podcast on Google.

According to Collingwood Museum Supervisor Melissa Shaw, the museum has been experimenting with merch to gauge community interest and their first T-shirt launch for International Women’s Day was a sold-out success.

The shirt featured a photo of women working at the Collingwood Shipyards with the caption “This is women’s work.”

The museum will be launching a new shirt design featuring a 1940s era photograph of what is now Heritage Drive.

The exact design is being kept secret and will be unveiled on Tuesday at 9 a.m. via the museum’s Facebook page.

“The community excitement generated by the Women’s Work shirts has created the closest feeling of community involvement for staff since the beginning of the pandemic,” said Shaw in a news release. “We have been overjoyed by the community’s response to our new line of apparel, even more so by the number of descendants calling from across the province to share stories about their mothers, aunts, cousins, and grandmothers who built ships in Collingwood during World War II.”

During the month of May the local museum is leaning into this year’s Museum Month theme: The Future of Museums: Recover and Reimagine.

In addition to the T-shirt launch and new podcast, Shaw reported to council’s Corporate and Community Services standing committee on May 6 that work is continuing on a new shipyards exhibit at the museum. They are currently adding some ship models that have been in storage for the last several years.

While the museum is closed to in-person visits, staff are interacting with the public virtually through the museum’s Facebook page and thanks to calls and emails from residents and former residents eager to share a story of Collingwood.
