Sleigh bells ring, are you listening? If you are listening in Collingwood around 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve you could hear them.

Councillor Yvonne Hamlin is calling on Collingwood residents to ring bells on Christmas Eve as part of a worldwide effort to inspire Christmas spirit.

She learned about an international initiative called Worldwide Christmas Eve Jingle through a Facebook group that has gathered more than 420,000 members. The group was created to encourage people from wherever they are to ring a bell outside for two minutes at 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve.

The concept struck a chord with Hamlin as she scrolled through the Facebook group.

"It makes you feel like we're all in it together," she said.

She put a call out to fellow council members and all Collingwood residents to join her in the Christmas Eve Jingle by chiming in during council's community announcement spot during a Monday night meeting (Dec. 14)

The appeal of the event was, for Hamlin, its potential to resonate in Collingwood and beyond.

"All over the world there will be a constant stream of bell ringing." said Hamlin. "It's a hopeful Christmas spirit event in such a dismal year on so many fronts."
