There are a few extra youth in town this week thanks to a YMCA program.

There are 10 youth from Pictou, Nova Scotia, in Collingwood this week as part of the YMCA youth exchange program.

Emily Dubuc of the Collingwood YMCA and Heather Beaton of the Pictou YMCA are both facilitators of this week’s exchange and have been taking the youth on various local tours.

The kids, in Grade 8 through 10, toured the Collingwood Museum today and met the mayor this afternoon. This evening they’ll be going to the Collingwood Youth Centre for a cooking class, according to Dubuc.

Last week over March Break a group of 12 youth from Collingwood and Wasaga Beach travelled to Pictou for their part of the exchange.

In Collingwood, the youth are staying at a chalet at Blue Mountain, and the Collingwood exchange students have an option to stay there as well.

Later this week, both groups will be going to Cedar Glen outdoor education centre where they will be volunteering on the grounds with some wood chopping and vegetable garden chores. The rest of the weekend will be spent on activities with a focus on team-building and leadership.

In Pictou, the group volunteered in a transitional care unit at the hospital, where patients go to await a spot in long-term care.

The teens head back to Nova Scotia on Sunday.
