The Town of Collingwood is pleased to announce the grand opening of the accessible change room at the Centennial Aquatic Centre. This new addition features a lift and other assistance opportunities that help swimmers who are in wheelchairs, or need changing assistance, to access opportunities at the Aquatic Centre.

This Accessible Change Room project began through an accessibility barrier concern submitted through the Town’s Accessibility Advisory Committee program.

Staff had already started considering an enhanced accessibility change room, with inspiration from Mary McCain and her son Darcy. This kick-started the drive to find funding sources.

The Town was unsuccessful in a grant application process, however, with a modified plan and private donors, the Accessible Change Room became a reality. Maria Andrews generously donated a lifting device, in memory of Ashley Fillion, and also helped Town Staff to understand the broader impact that this project would have on the community.

“On behalf of the Town and community, thank you to the Accessibility Advisory Committee for all of the great work they do, including the support of this service enhancement at the Pool” said Mayor Brian Saunderson at the ribbon cutting and grand opening celebration that took place on Thursday, April 4 at the Centennial Aquatic Centre.
